Fiera Sempione
The past and the Ticinello
The past and the Austrian mockery.
The Fiera-Sempione district extends over a large area of the Milanese territory ranging from the neighboring areas of the City Life area with the purely “Fiera” part (which we refer to in our article “City Life District”), to the entire part of the homonymous Corso and at the Arco della Pace. The Fiera / Sempione district is the area closest to Corso Sempione (and the adjacent streets), which is the epilogue of the Sempione road, initially built in the Napoleonic era in 1801, to connect Milan to Paris. The urban planning that characterizes it is structured according to the neoclassical fashion of the time and the Corso leads in perspective to the Arco della Pace, the latter initially named Arco del Trionfo and built in 1806 by the architect Luigi Cagnola to celebrate Eugenio’s wedding of Beauharnais, Deputy King of Italy and adopted son of Napoleon. Subsequently, again by Cagnola, the final structure was completed in honor of the battle won in Jena; the works resumed at the end of 1926 under the Austrian dominion which dedicated it in honor of the peace reached by the European nations in 1815 through the congresses of Vienna. A noteworthy curiosity: the Austrians rotated their horses 180 degrees so that their backs turned towards France as an act of mockery. Returning to Corso Sempione, it ends in Piazza Firenze which in the past was a well-known roundabout for the carriages of the nobles. Here, too, from the middle of the Corso towards the outskirts, as in other areas of Milan, it was initially mainly countryside and then over the years, particularly from the 1930s, it was increasingly urbanized and included in the City.

The present and the Milanese nightlife
In addition to being a district that boasts the widest and most tree-lined street in Milan (Corso Sempione) and being equipped with all services for the person, with numerous supermarkets and shops, this district has in its district numerous micro-zones, known to the City for being one of the hubs of the Milanese nightlife (together with: Navigli / Brera / Isola). In particular, in the 200 meters of pedestrian street that advances from Corso Sempione towards the Arco della Pace, there are many clubs that, especially in the evening, are packed with young and old looking for fun. Another area of the neighborhood, less central but certainly no less “lively” is via Piero della Francesca, full of historical and modern places of various kinds, both culinary and pure “Milanese nightlife”.

Evolution and its historic buildings
The reality that is articulated around Corso Sempione and its neighbors is a reality made above all of historic buildings such as: the Rai headquarters and the Vespa building. Between the early 1930s and late 1950s many buildings were erected as residential buildings on projects by well-known architects and engineers including: Vincenzo Passarelli, Mario Asnago, Claudio Vender, Pietro Lingeri, Giuseppe Terragni, Vittore Ceretti … and to this day they are used for this purpose. From the beginning and in the following years, the Corso has always been used as a strategic urban artery for important commercial traffic and is still well served both with connections to other important Milanese arteries and by public transport. In recent times, the neighborhood has been one of the most sought-after residential areas in Milan, in particular for those looking for a central place, but which at the same time, being contextualized within a large residential area, can also have advantages on the quality of life, such as many open spaces and the proximity to the adjacent Parco Sempione, a green area completely fenced and under video surveillance, which covers an area of 300,000,000 square meters.
